Centre writes to 5 states over surge in Covid-19 cases

New Delhi, June 3 (FN Representative) The Centre on Friday raised an alarm over the surge of Covid-19 cases in a few parts of the county despite a significant decline nationally. The Union Health Ministry wrote to five states asking to take immediate action to prevent the spread of the infection. The letters were written to the Principal Secretaries of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Telangana, Karnataka and Maharashtra asking them to take prompt action and effective management to contain the virus infection.

The Ministry further asked to monitor the localised spread of infection in each state. This comes after the single-day rise in new coronavirus infections was recorded above 4,000 after nearly three months on Friday “A sustained and significant decline in the number of Covid-19 cases has been observed in India over the past three months. However, from the past one week, a slight upsurge in case is being noticed with 15,708 cases reported in the week ending May 27 rising to 21,055 cases reported in the week ending June 3,” Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said in a letter. The health secretary further said there are a few states that are reporting a higher contribution to India’s Covid-19 cases, indicating the possibility of a localized spread of infection.

The Ministry has asked the states to maintain a strict watch and take pre-emptive action if required to control any emerging spread of infection. India reported a fresh spike in daily Covid-19 cases with 4,041 new infections in the last 24 hours, as per the Centre’s data on Friday at 8 am. The country reported 3,712 cases of Covid-19 infections on the previous day.
