Russia-Ukraine war stoking global food crisis: G7

Washington, May 15 (Agency) The Group of Seven (G7) countries warned that the war in Ukraine could potentially lead to a global food and energy crisis threatening poor countries, and said that urgent measures are needed to force Russia to unblock stores of grain that it is preventing from leaving Ukraine, Aljazeera reported on Saturday. Hosting the G7 meeting German foreign minister Annalena Baerbock, said on Saturday the war had become a “global crisis”, as up to 50 million people, particularly in Africa and the Middle East, would likely face hunger in the coming months unless ways are found to release the grain being held by Ukrainian because it accounts for a sizeable share of the worldwide supply.

G7 also pledged that it will provide further humanitarian aid to the most vulnerable. Canada’s foreign minister, Melanie Joly, said her country, another major agricultural exporter, is ready to send ships to European ports to help Ukrainian grain can be brought to those in need. The G7 nations also called upon China not to help Russia, including by undermining international sanctions or justifying Moscow’s actions in Ukraine.
