Cong slams BJP over proposal to rename roads

New Delhi, May 10 (Representative) The Congress on Tuesday accused the BJP of trying to create “unrest”after its Delhi unit president Adesh Gupta wrote a letter to New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) to rename five roads including Akbar road stating that these are symbols of slavery. “The BJP is trying to disturb communal harmony by trying to rename roads and 40 villages in Delhi,” Delhi Congress chief Anil Chaudhary said here. He further said, “If the BJP wants to improve Delhi, then it should build new community centres, improve MCD schools, provide better civic facilities in the villages and urban villages to change the face of these villages, instead of creating unrest in the society with provocative remaining of historic areas in the national capital.”

The BJP did not do anything for the welfare of the people or improve the civic facilities after remaining in power in the Municipal Corporations of Delhi for 15 years, Chaudhary alleged. He also appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to name the new Parliament building after former President of India, APJ Abdul Kalam. In his letter addressed to the NDMC Chairman, Gupta proposed to change the name of Tughlaq Road to Guru Gobind Singh Marg, Aurangzeb Lane to APJ Abdul Kalam lane, Babar Lane to Khudiram Bose Lane, as per a copy of the letter shared by him on social media. Among others, Humayun Road to Maharishi Valmiki Road and Shahjahan Road to General Bipin Singh Rawat Road. Gupta’s letter to the NDMC comes days after he sent a memorandum to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal requesting him for renaming 40 villages in the national capital after eminent personalities from different walks of life.
