Kolkata, March 24 (FN Agency) Congress Parliamentary party leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, on Thursday wrote to President Ram Nath Kovind demanding imposition of Article 355 of the Indian Constitution in West Bengal saying the law and order situation has completely broken down in the state. Choudhary has been vocal in demanding imposition of Article 355 in the state after eight people, six women and two children were burnt alive at Bogui village in Birbhum district on Tuesday.
The mob fury was in retaliation to the murder of a Trinamool Congress leader. In his letter Chowdhury, who is MP from Baharampur in Murshidabad, also highlighted the crime scenes in the state in which some 26 people have been murdered in the past weeks. “On Monday, the 21st March 2022, there was a violent fight between two groups of the ruling party in Bogtui village in Birbhum district. The Deputy Chief Pradhan, Bhadu Sheikh was killed and in retaliation houses in the area were attacked and set on fire resulting in 12 deaths including that of women and children. All the members belong to the minority community.”
Chowdhury’s letter stated. Chowdhury, who is also the state Congress president, said the law and order machinery in West Bengal had broken down, there were as many as 26 political murders that happened recently. Among them were both TMC and Congress newly elected Councillor of North 24 Parganas and Purulia district. “In view of the deteriorating law and order situation in West Bengal, I request you to invoke Article 355 of the Constitution to ensure that the Government of West Bengal is carried on under the provisions of the Constitution,” the Congress leader said.
