Jalpaiguri, March 17 (Bureau) Six women and a man – all Rohingyas – have been arrested from the New Jalpaiguri station in northern West Bengal on their way to New Delhi, police said on Thursday. The Rohingyas were being presented before a court of law on Thursday. The detention and arrest were made in a collaboration between the Government Railway Police (GRP) and the state police after the former picked up the seven persons from a Delhi-bound train at the NJP station on Wednesday afternoon.
The arrest was made for their alleged illegal entry into India without valid documents. The law enforcement agencies got a tip-off that the seven Rohingyas had entered the Indian border state Assam from Bangladesh and then took a train to NJP on way to New Delhi. Police Identified the male as Mohammad Zubair, a 34 year-old Muyanmar national, but the identities of the women could not be established immediately. The women are mostly between 20-40 years of age. They said they came to India in search of jobs. All the seven foreign nationals were being taken to the Jalpaiguri district court for the judicial process to roll.
