UK raised Oxfam FCRA issue: India

New Delhi, March 15 (Agency) The Home Ministry on Tuesday said the UK government had raised the issue of Oxfam being denied registration under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act and said the NGO was denied the registration as it did not fulfill the criteria. “The Government of United Kingdom raised the issue of status of Oxfam India … during the bilateral dialogue held on February 10,” Minister of State for Home Niyanand Rai said in a written reply in Parliament. The status of Oxfam India was shared with the UK, Rai added.

Around 6,000 NGOs and organistions were removed from the list of registered organisations under the FCRA including the Indian Medical Association, Jamia Millia Islamia University and Oxfam India in January this year. According to the Home Ministry website, the number of organisations registered under the Foreign Contributions Regulation Act dipped from 22,762 on December 31, 2021 to 16,829 on January 1, 2022, going down by 5,933.

Kolkata-based Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, India Islamic Cultural Centre, Common Cause, Hamdard Education Society, Tubercolosis Association Of India and the Indira Gandhi National Center for Arts are also off the list. The Delhi School Of Social Work Society, Bhartiya Sanskriti Parishad, DAV College Trust and Management Society, Godrej Memorial Trust, The Delhi Public School Society and the Nuclear Science Centre in JNU are some other organisations. Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity was denied FCRA clearance but it was restored later.
