Delhi Riots: Ex-Congress Councillor Ishrat Jahan gets bail

New Delhi, March 14 (Bureau) A local court on Monday granted bail to former Congress Councillor Ishrat Jahan, who was arrested in the Northeast Delhi riots case of 2020. Jehan was a Congress Councillor from 2012-17 and was a member of the All India Congress Committee. She was arrested in the month of February 2020 when communal riots were raging in northeast Delhi over the CAA-NRC protests. In this matter, Ishrat Jahan was arrested by Investigating Agency under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for her alleged involvement in the northeast Delhi riots of 2020, in which 53 people were killed and over 700 were injured.

Counsel for Ishrat Jahan submitted before the court that there is no evidence against the Jahan proving her involvement in the Delhi riots conspiracy case and prosecution has falsely implicated her in this case. The prosecution opposed the bail application by submitting that she had no reason to align with the other co-accused in the case, but to conspire for the Delhi riots. Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat, after hearing arguments on behalf of the Prosecution and Defence Counsel, granted bail to Ishrat Jahan with certain terms and conditions and deferred the bail application’s order of co-accused Sharjeel Imam and Saleem Khan to March 22.
