Chennai, March 3 (Agency) A landmark moment in the history of Indian domestic cricket came on Thursday as Railways and J&K walked out to the field to play the 5000th game of the Ranji Trophy. The teams are playing an Elite Group C match here at the Chemplast Ground, Chennai. BCCI took to Twitter and said, “5000 reasons to celebrate! A landmark moment in the history of #RanjiTrophy!” On February 17, the tournament returned after a hiatus of two years.
It was scheduled to begin in January this year, but was postponed due to the rising Covid-19 cases in the country. The tournament is named after Ranjitsinhji, the first Indian cricketer who played international cricket. Ranji Trophy was launched in July 1934 with the first match held on November 4 between Madras and Mysore at the Chepuk ground.
