SKM says will resume protests if Centre does not keep promises

New Delhi, Jan 31 (FN Agency) Farmers will be left with no option but to resume their agitation, if the union government continues to renege on the promises made to protesting farmers in December 2021, Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) said on Monday. After holding protests across the country to mark “Day of Betrayal”, the agitating farmers’ group said tens of thousands of farmers across the nation participated in protest demonstrations held in hundreds of districts and blocks across the country. Memorandums were submitted in the name of the President of India through the District Collectors, SDMs and ADMs. The Memorandum addressed to the President said that as the Head of the State, it is the President’s constitutional obligation to protect the interests of the ‘Annadata’ (Farmers), the largest section of the country, and warned the government against committing this fraud on the farmers.

“Due to the tireless efforts of the farmers, despite the lockdown and the economic slowdown, the agricultural production of the country has increased continuously. Playing tricks with farmers can be disastrous for the whole country,” the memorandum reads,” the SKM said. “The Government of India’s reneging of the promises made to the farmers of the historic Kisan Andolan of 2020-21 was marked as “betrayal day” with demonstrations, marches, and effigy burning in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tripura among other states,” a statement said. Government of India has given a written assurances to Samyukta Kisan Morcha in a letter dated December 9, 2021.

“Not one of the promise has been fulfilled,” the SKM, which spearheading the protests against the three repealed farm laws, said. “The Morcha warns the BJP government against testing the farmers patience, and declares that if the promises are not fulfilled at the earliest, the farmers would be left with no option but to resume the agitation,” a statement said. It also said farmers are continuing their “Mission Uttar Pradesh” and campaign will be held across the state to “punish and defeat BJP”. The SKM will hold a press conference on February 3 to announce further course of action.
