Mizoram introduces aeroponic potato seed production system

Aizawl, Dec 19 (FN Agency) In a move to boost potato cultivation, Mizoram’s agriculture & farmers’ welfare minister P.C. Vanlalruata on Thursday inaugurated the state’s first aeroponic system for potato seed production at the agriculture farm in Thingdawl, Kolasib district, according to an official statement. The project, fully funded by the Northeastern Council (NEC), aims to address the chronic shortage of potato seeds in Mizoram during sowing seasons, said department deputy director Samuel Lalliansanga. Lalliansanga explained that the system has the capacity to produce 2.5 lakh mini tubers (potato seeds) per season. With two production cycles annually, it is expected to yield 5 lakh mini tubers a year.

“This innovative method involves processing potato plants in a tissue culture laboratory before transferring them to an aeroponic production unit, where the roots grow suspended in air without soil. The plants are nourished using water and nutrient sprays, ensuring healthier seeds while utilising minimal soil and space,” he said. The project, executed by Ludhiana-based Blue Stallion Equipment (P) Ltd., has been set up at a cost of Rs 1.98 crore. Mizoram currently imports over 90% of its potato consumption from outside the state. This project is expected to significantly reduce dependence on external sources while providing farmers with high-quality potato seeds. “This system is not just about addressing seed shortages but also about modernising agriculture by using efficient and sustainable methods to maximise production in limited spaces,” Lalliansanga added. The initiative is anticipated to benefit local farmers and contribute to Mizoram’s agricultural self-reliance.
